Cavalry horsemanship was a serious part of the Army's training in the early twentieth century, and this print shows soldiers mounted for jumping exercises, a skill that tested both rider and horse over obstacles. The caption card gives a date somewhere between 1910 and 1920, a period when the Army still relied heavily on horse-mounted units before mechanized forces took over in the years after World War I. Jumping drills built balance, control, and trust between a soldier and his mount, and images like this one record a training culture that was soon overtaken by motor vehicles and tanks. Note that the date and title come from the caption card and have not been independently verified.
