Philip Kearney's division is shown fighting in dense woods on Monday, June 30, 1862, during the Glendale phase of the Seven Days battles that ended McClellan's advance on Richmond. Alfred R. Waud, a staff artist who sketched battlefield scenes for Harper's Weekly, drew the scene on the spot, and the wood engraving appeared in the August 9, 1862 issue. Kearney, a one-armed veteran of the Mexican War known for aggressive leadership, fought his men through thick timber where smoke and undergrowth made it hard for commanders to see the whole line.
