Few portraits from this period capture a Gilded Age society figure as directly as this one, which the record identifies as Mrs. George Jay Gould, wife of the son of the railroad financier Jay Gould. Edith Kingdon Gould had worked as a stage actress before her marriage into one of the country's wealthiest families, and studio portraits like this one show how such women were presented to the public in the early 1900s. The photograph was made in New York by Theodore C. Marceau, a studio photographer working in the city during these years.
