Robert B. Taney, the fifth Chief Justice of the United States, is the subject of this 1899 etching by Max Rosenthal, a portrait made decades after his death in 1864. Taney led the Supreme Court from 1836 until his death, and his name is tied most closely to the Dred Scott decision of 1857, which denied citizenship to Black Americans and shaped the national debate that led to the Civil War. The record's caption-card notes are unverified, so the attribution and publication details should be checked against other sources before relying on them.
