William Ewart Gladstone, the British statesman who served as prime minister four separate times between 1868 and 1894, is the subject of this portrait, though the record gives no date and no photographer's name. Gladstone was the dominant Liberal figure of Victorian politics, known for his budgets, his campaign for Irish home rule, and his long rivalry with Benjamin Disraeli. Portraits of him circulated widely in the nineteenth century, as photographs like this one were reproduced in newspapers, books, and popular picture magazines. Because the caption card is unverified, the exact year of the sitting is uncertain.
