Sandroft's name on this engraving marks him as the man who led the Church of England at a turbulent moment: he became Archbishop of Canterbury in 1678 and held the office through the Revolution of 1688. The print is the work of David Loggan, a Dutch-born engraver who worked in England and produced many portraits of churchmen and scholars, often for university collections. The caption card does not record a date, but the style is typical of Loggan's work from the late seventeenth century. Sandroft is remembered for refusing to read the king's Declaration of Indulgence in 1688, which led to his brief imprisonment, and for refusing the oath to William and Mary, which cost him his see in 1690.
