The title points to *Gasoline Alley*, the comic strip Frank King began drawing for the Chicago Tribune in 1918, but the record does not say whether this picture is connected to the strip, to a real street or garage, or to something else. The strip followed a small-town man named Walt Wallet and, from 1921, a foundling he named Skeezix, and it became one of the longest-running family comics of its era. Since the record gives no maker or date, the picture is best read as an image of the early automobile age, when gas stations and garages were spreading along American roads. Anyone using it for research should look for a date and source before relying on it.
