Unlike many wartime prints of planes in flight, this etching and drypoint focuses on the danger of flying over the South Pacific, where aircraft accidents were a grim part of daily operations. Hans Kleiber made the print around 1942 or 1943, when American fighter squadrons were fighting across the vast ocean theater. The work belongs to a larger wave of American printmaking from the early 1940s, when artists turned their skills to the war effort. Its signature in pencil and its inclusion in the 1983 Library of Congress catalog *Artists for Victory* place it among the notable works of that movement.
