A stone-and-timber staircase descends into a cellar at the east end of a south wing, its treads worn and its lower steps falling into shadow. The caption card dates the picture to somewhere between about 1852 and 1860, a period when photographers still relied on long exposures, so the image shows little movement and sharp detail. The record does not name the building, so its purpose and history cannot be confirmed. Still, utilitarian passages like this one, often overlooked in favor of façades and interiors, offer a useful view of how working buildings were arranged in the mid-nineteenth century.
