Few images show the scale of France's wartime losses as directly as a burial scene from 1919, the year after the Armistice ended fighting on the Western Front. France lost roughly 1.3 million men during the war, and in the postwar years crews worked to recover, identify, and rebury the dead from battlefields and temporary graves. Mass burials like the one shown here were part of that grim work. The print is a rare record of how the aftermath of the war was handled on the ground, away from the official ceremonies that came later.
