The stone in this c1938 print is the Kensington Runestone, a slab of greywacke with carved runic script that Swedish-American farmer Olof Ohman reportedly turned up in 1898 while clearing land near Kensington, Minnesota. The inscription claims to record a party of Norse travelers in the region in 1362. Most runologists and historians have judged it a 19th-century carving, but the stone became a local celebrity and a source of civic pride. The Alexandria Chamber of Commerce credit on the print suggests it was made to promote the town and the stone's visitor appeal during the Depression era.
