Few views of American watchmaking survive from this period, and this one shows the Dueber-Hampden Watch Works in Canton, Ohio, the factory that made the company's watch cases and movements. The record credits the photograph to P.D. Luke, a Canton photographer, who registered it for copyright, and dates it to about 1902 based on an old caption card that has not been independently verified. The company grew from John C. Dueber's case-making business, which merged with the Hampden Watch Company, and by the early 1900s Canton was a center of American watch production. The picture is useful for seeing how large the industrial plant had become.
