This lithograph shows the courtyard of the palace at Sari, a city on the southern Caspian coast of Iran, then under Qajar rule. Its French title and the 1859 date suggest it was produced for a European audience, part of the wave of illustrated travel writing about Persia that drew on the reports of French diplomats and artists in the 1840s and 1850s. Such images were valued as firsthand views of architecture and daily life in a region most European readers would never visit. The record does not name the artist, so the picture is best read as a European view of a Persian palace setting, shaped by the conventions and interests of its time.
