The doorway of the Assumption Cathedral in Kostroma, a Volga river town northeast of Moscow, is the focus of this small square print, which was pasted into an album. The cataloguer's date of about 1910 is bracketed, meaning it is an estimate rather than a recorded date. The cathedral stands within the old kremlin on a hill above the river, one of the historic towns of the Golden Ring. Its catalog record also lists icons, suggesting that the church's sacred images were of interest to the photographer or to the album's compiler.
