A vidette was a mounted sentry posted ahead of a main column to watch for approaching danger, and the title points to that lookout role that cavalry and frontier riders often played. The picture reproduces a photoprint copyrighted by W. Herbert Dunton, an illustrator known for Western subjects in the early twentieth century. The caption card that came with it lists cowboys and Indians as the subjects, but that information is unverified, so the scene is best read as a period image of the frontier rather than a documented event. Western scenes like this were widely reproduced in the 1910s, when they filled magazines and popular prints.
