Its French title, *Un poilu à Pétain*, places an ordinary infantryman, the *poilu* of the First World War, in relation to General Philippe Pétain, who rose to fame defending Verdun in 1916. Théophile Alexandre Steinlen, a Paris artist known for his cabaret posters and cat drawings, made many lithographs during the war showing soldiers and the families they left behind. The catalog dates the sheet to about 1914, but that date is unverified, and the print may well come from later in the war, when Pétain's name carried far more weight with the public.
