The record singles out a stable built for greyhound keepers and attached to the Selimiye Barracks, a complex on the Asian side of the Bosphorus near Üsküdar. The barracks are best known from the Crimean War, when the large building served as a British military hospital and Florence Nightingale worked there. This print is one of a series from an album of Ottoman government buildings, including police stations and Ministry of War structures, assembled for Sultan Abdul Hamid II between the 1880s and early 1890s. Its captions in Ottoman Turkish and French show the album was meant to document the empire's state architecture for an audience beyond Istanbul.
