Sierra Nevada snowfields are the particular subject here, with the high slopes rendered in the fine, controlled lines of an etching. Roi Partridge, an American printmaker active in California in the 1920s, made many such landscapes of the western mountains, and the catalog raisonné by Anthony R. White (1988) lists this plate as number 134 in his work. The print dates to about 1922, when the Sierra was drawing growing numbers of artists and visitors eager to record its rugged terrain. Its focus on snow and mountain forms reflects a broader interest among American printmakers of the period in wilderness as a subject in its own right.
