Its title places this earthen hut somewhere in the Aleutian Islands, though the question mark shows the location comes from a caption card and isn't firmly documented. Edward S. Curtis made the photoprint around 1899 while traveling with the Harriman Alaska Expedition, the scientific voyage sponsored by railroad executive E.H. Harriman, whose name appears in the copyright line. Partly sunk into the ground and roofed with sod, such dwellings, called barabaras, were traditional Aleut homes, and the fence beside this one suggests the yard around a household. Curtis later became known for his photographs of Native peoples across North America.
