Unlike many views in this set that name a particular city or landmark, this print carries only the country's name, and it is catalogued as No. 113 in the Frank and Frances Carpenter Collection. It dates to roughly 1910 to 1920, the decade after Japan formally annexed the Korean Empire in 1910 and placed the peninsula under colonial rule. Travel writers such as Frank Carpenter, who wrote for American newspapers and books, supplied Western readers with images of distant lands, and prints like this one reflect that appetite for a country many Americans knew little about. The bare title frames Korea as a whole rather than as a single scene, which is worth noticing when considering what the picture chooses to show.
