Noah Webster is shown here in a steel engraving made after a painting by Chappel, a portrait that presents the lexicographer as the familiar figure of American learning. Webster (1758-1843) is best remembered for his "American Dictionary of the English Language," published in 1828, which set out to give the young nation a vocabulary and spelling of its own, distinct from British usage. He also produced the "Blue-Backed Speller," a schoolbook that taught generations of American children to read. This print, issued around 1867 by Johnson, Fry & Co., shows how his reputation had settled into a national emblem decades after his death.
