Martin Augustine Knapp is the subject of this c1908 portrait, a photoprint copyrighted by the Washington, D.C., studio of G.V. Buck. Knapp was a lawyer who spent much of his career on federal regulation of the railroads, serving on the Interstate Commerce Commission, which had been created in 1887 to oversee rail rates and practices. Studio portraits like this one from the early 1900s were often made for official use, publication or sale, so the image reflects the formal style of the period in Washington. The caption card details are unverified, so the exact occasion for the sitting is not recorded.
