Taken from the south, this view of Trinity Cathedral shows a cluster of onion domes rising above the walls of the Solovetsky Monastery on the Solovetsky Islands in the White Sea. The monastery was founded in the 15th century and grew into one of the most important religious and economic centers in northern Russia, with fortified walls that guarded it from raiders and the sea. This small 8 by 8 centimeter print, mounted in an album, dates from 1915, when the islands were still reached mainly by boat. Its later history as a Soviet prison camp, beginning in the 1920s, gives the scene a weight that viewers today often notice.
