This photograph shows a scene staged outdoors and titled "Hiawatha. Out of childhood into manhood," which draws on Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's 1855 poem *The Song of Hiawatha*. The record suggests it may be the work of F.E. Moore of Middletown, Ohio, and its subjects point to the open-air theatrical productions and costumed tableaux popular in the early 1900s. Longfellow based his poem loosely on Ojibwe legends collected by Henry Rowe Schoolcraft, so the costumes here reflect the romantic, and often inaccurate, view of Native life common at the time.
