A 1950 press photograph from Bell Telephone Laboratories in New York, issued with its own caption as release number 182929, makes sound visible as a pattern on a page. Bell's researchers, working for the company that ran much of the nation's telephone system, spent years studying speech and hearing, and recording waveforms photographically was a standard way to turn a fleeting vibration into something that could be measured and explained. Pictures like this one helped translate that laboratory work for newspaper readers who rarely saw what a voice looked like.
