Two women chatting with water jars on their shoulders capture a daily routine at Acoma Pueblo in New Mexico, where water had to be hauled up from springs and fields below the mesa. The Library of Congress record links the image to the subjects of subsistence, dress, pottery, and water supply, all of which were central to life in the village. Edward S. Curtis made the photograph around 1905, and it appeared in volume 16 of *The North American Indian*, his multivolume survey of Native peoples published from 1907 to 1930. Curtis often staged such scenes to show traditional work and dress, so the picture reflects his choices as much as everyday life at Acoma.
