Three men named in the record, Richard Delafield, Alfred Mordecai and George B. McClellan, appear in this cut-down whole plate daguerreotype as members of the U.S. Military Commission to Crimea. The group was made around 1855, when the Crimean War was under way and the United States sent army officers to observe the armies fighting in Europe. Delafield led the commission, and McClellan, who later commanded the Army of the Potomac in the Civil War, was one of its younger officers. The photographer is unidentified, but the plate's trimmed size and its later mounting show how daguerreotypes were often altered after they were made.
