Gibraltar's rock stands at the western mouth of the Mediterranean, where the strait meets the Atlantic, and this 1948 photoprint shows that fortress position from the air or a high vantage point as the British government's Central Office of Information presented it. The Rock has been held by Britain since 1704, when it was taken during the War of the Spanish Succession, and its garrison has controlled access to the sea between Europe and Africa ever since. The record notes that the print was issued in London and carries a caption card, though its details are unverified, so the views of the fortifications and surrounding waters are best read as a postwar record of a strategic outpost.
