Titled as a general view taken above the aqueduct at Algeciras, this lithograph looks across the bay toward Gibraltar, the British fortress whose limestone Rock rises at the tip of the peninsula. The sheet was issued by the Paris publisher François Delarue sometime between 1850 and 1860 and belongs to a series called *L'Espagne à vol d'oiseau*, or "Spain as seen from a bird's flight," which offered European viewers elevated panoramas of Spanish places. Britain had held Gibraltar since 1704, so a French print of the town reflects the strategic interest and curiosity the Rock drew throughout the nineteenth century.
