A float carrying a "Princess of Mauoa" rolled through Honolulu on March 18, 1909, in the kind of decorated procession the city often staged in those years. Mauoa is a valley behind the city, so naming the float after it tied the parade to local place and island stories rather than mainland themes. The photograph comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of news pictures made in the early twentieth century, and it shows how Honolulu's pageants mixed Hawaiian imagery with the tastes of a territory that had been part of the United States since 1898.
