Kerr Eby's etching looks past the front door to the small, crowded yards behind ordinary houses, a part of domestic life that is usually overlooked. Made in the 1930s, when many American families were squeezed by the Depression and lived in older, close-set housing, the print records the everyday clutter and makeshift spaces of that period. Eby was an illustrator and printmaker known for scenes of working people and city life, and this subject fits his wider interest in ordinary places. The pencil signature and Tuscany watermark identify it as a signed impression.
