Titled *A Toltec princess*, this photogravure reproduces a painting by P. Fritel and shows an idealized Mesoamerican woman in elaborate dress. The caption places the scene in America at the time of the Spanish invasion, but the Toltecs had faded as a political power around the 12th century, well before Cortés arrived in 1519. The source is a drawing held in a Madrid museum, and the Gebbie imprint reflects the late-19th-century appetite for printed reproductions of imagined historical subjects. Viewers should read the costume and setting as the artist's interpretation rather than documentary evidence.
