Redouté's engraving of the lettuce-leaved rose, known in the record as *Rosa centifolia bullata*, shows a cultivar whose puckered, crinkled petals earned it its French name, "rosier à feuilles de laitue." The plate comes from *Les Roses*, the lavish botanical book Pierre-Joseph Redouté produced in Paris, published by Firmin Didot between 1817 and 1824. Redouté, often called the "Raphael of flowers," painted his subjects in watercolor and the engravings reproduce that delicacy closely, a reason his roses remain prized by botanists and collectors alike.
