Few figures of the French Revolution drew as much hostile commentary as Jean-Paul Marat, the radical journalist whose name anchors this hand-colored etching, *Triomphe de Marat*. The title alludes to his trial before the Revolutionary Tribunal in April 1793, when he was acquitted and borne through Paris by cheering supporters. Satirical prints of this kind used such scenes to argue over the Terror and the factional fighting that threatened the Republic. Marat was stabbed to death in his bath by Charlotte Corday that July, which gives the cartoon a grim afterlife.
