The title *Triomphe de Marat* points to a specific moment: in April 1793 the Revolutionary Tribunal acquitted Jean-Paul Marat of charges brought against him, and supporters celebrated him in the streets and at the National Convention. This etching, with its hand-applied watercolor, is one of many French caricatures of that period, and its sarcastic title suggests the artist was mocking that celebration rather than honoring it. Political prints like this circulated widely during the Revolution, and they show how fiercely Marat, a radical journalist and deputy, was attacked and defended. Three months after the acquittal, Charlotte Corday stabbed him in his bath, which gives the print a grim additional context.
