Benjamin Henry Latrobe inscribed this sheet "Jany 26 1800," and it shows the principal story of a military academy, with a dining hall, a lecture room, and a "Haha Ditch," a sunken boundary that keeps a grounds edge out of sight from the building. Latrobe, an English-born architect who had settled in the United States in 1795, was then working on federal buildings in the new capital, and the "No II" marking suggests this was one sheet in a set. The clean ink and wash lines show how a planner of the period arranged teaching and daily life under one roof.
