Here, a crate of the season's first strawberries is shown at the airfield in Wauchula, a small town in central Florida's Hardee County that was known for its berry crop. Flying fresh fruit north was a novel idea in the early 1930s, when most perishable produce still traveled slowly by rail and truck, so the picture records an effort to get the harvest to market faster. The photograph was made by George B. Moore, whose name appears in the copyright notation, and it is dated around February 1931. It is a useful record of how air transport was being tested for farm goods in the Depression years.
