Most of the animal drawings on this board show creatures in their natural settings, but this one puts a sloth in a tangle of tree limbs, drawn in pencil and ink for a comic effect. The record dates it to about 1899, when American humor magazines regularly used exotic animals to poke fun at human habits. The sloth had long been a symbol of idleness, and an illustrator could rely on that reputation to make a joke land without a caption. The drawing is by O. Herford, a British-born American humorist and illustrator who contributed light verse and pictures to the periodicals of the period. Its quick linework shows how such magazine art was built to be read at a glance.
