A facsimile autograph appears on this lithograph of Richard Bassett, which pairs a likeness with the signature of a man who helped shape the nation's founding document. Bassett (1745-1815) represented Delaware at the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia in 1787 and was one of the delegates who signed the finished Constitution that September. He later served in the U.S. Senate and as governor of Delaware. Because the print dates from between 1850 and 1900, it was made long after Bassett's death, when interest in the signers had grown and such portraits circulated as keepsakes of the Revolutionary generation.
