A man hangs beneath a glider's wing in this drawing, flying beside a bird in an open sky. The image was reproduced as a halftone, a printing method that let publishers place tonal pictures on the same page as type, and it serves here as the frontispiece to an 1899 Boston book. Gliding was drawing wide attention then, largely through Otto Lilienthal's experiments in Germany, which ended with his death in 1896. The catalog details come from an old caption card and have not been independently checked.
