The German title, "Ender Elch bei Graf Keyserlingk," translates roughly to "Last Elk at Count Keyserlingk's," which points to an animal that was once common in the region and had become rare by the time the picture was made. Elk, known in German as Elch, once ranged through the forests of East Prussia and neighboring lands, and hunting and habitat loss reduced their numbers there sharply over the 19th and early 20th centuries. The record dates the picture to September 20, 1936, and its placement among American miscellany is unusual for a German-titled image, so the title and date are the best guides to its origin. The record does not name the photographer or the estate, so its exact circumstances remain uncertain.
