Among the many churches of Salvador, the Venerable Third Order of Saint Francis of Assisi stands out for its lavish interior, which is covered in gilded carved wood. Lay brotherhoods like this one, the Third Orders, built many of Brazil's Baroque churches during the colonial period, and they also managed charity, burials, and public processions. The caption card gives no date or photographer, so the picture's age is uncertain, but it shows a monument of the old colonial capital of Bahia.
