Cupid cast as a village fiddler gives this picture its character. The French title, *L'Amour Menétrier*, or "Cupid the Fiddler," shows the love god as a rustic musician rather than the usual archer. The image is a halftone reproduction of a painting by Sarah Paxton Ball Dodson, made by breaking the image into tiny dots so it could be printed alongside text. It appeared in the April 1908 issue of *Scribner's Magazine*, a New York monthly known for pairing fiction and essays with illustrations, on page 509. The record comes from a caption card, so some details remain unconfirmed.
