John Joseph McGraw, born in 1873, was a fiery third baseman and later one of the most successful managers in baseball history, and this 1899 portrait catches him early in his playing days. That year he was with the Baltimore Orioles, a club known for aggressive, hard-nosed play that McGraw helped define. The picture survives as a halftone reproduction of a photoprint copyrighted by the National Copper Plate Co., and the caption details come from a card whose data has not been verified. McGraw later managed the New York Giants for three decades and won three World Series titles.
