Charles Francis Jenkins, the Dayton-born inventor pictured here in a 1928 portrait, is best remembered for his work on early television and motion pictures. Jenkins spent much of his career on mechanical and electrical systems for transmitting images, and by the late 1920s he was broadcasting experimental pictures from his Washington, D.C. station. This Underwood & Underwood photoprint, one of the firm's many studio-style newspaper images of the era, was likely made for wire distribution to editors covering new technology. Its caption card lists the subjects Inventions, Radio, and Motion Pictures, which reflect the range of his work.
