Harper's Weekly published this page of wood engravings on November 19, 1859, about a month after John Brown and a small band of followers seized the federal arsenal at Harpers Ferry, Virginia, hoping to arm enslaved people for an uprising. The title, "Effect of John Brown's invasion at the South," points to the alarm the raid set off in slaveholding states, where rumors of revolt spread and militia units drilled and patrolled. Its subject headings include stereotypes, arms and slavery, which suggests the pictures play on white fears of armed Black resistance. Brown was tried and hanged in December, and the raid deepened sectional tensions in the months before the 1860 election.
