Few American resorts of the era drew as many summer visitors as White Sulphur Springs, a spa in the Allegheny foothills known for its mineral waters. This wood engraving, titled *A Reminiscence of the White Sulphur Springs*, appeared in *Harper's Weekly* on August 4, 1888, when the illustrated weekly was a leading source of pictures of American life. The title suggests a backward glance at the resort's past, a theme common in late-century print as the great hotels and their social seasons came to be remembered. Guests at such springs took the waters, strolled the verandas, and attended dances and concerts, so the scene likely reflects that leisured social world.
