A broadside view of the steamboat GRAND REPUBLIC, shown under way, puts the vessel's full length and layered decks on display. Steamboats like her carried passengers and freight along the Ohio and lower Mississippi rivers, and the trade was central to river towns through much of the nineteenth century. The caption card gives no date, but the upper cabins, pilothouse, and paddle-wheel arrangement reflect the riverboat designs of that era. The print is most useful for seeing how these working boats were laid out above the waterline.
