This view looks toward Kineo, the steep rock promontory that rises from the shore of Moosehead Lake in western Maine. The mountain's dark stone was prized long before the photographer arrived, since Wabanaki people quarried it to make tools and points. By the time this picture was taken, between 1884 and 1891, the lake had become a popular summer destination for sportsmen and vacationers, and a large resort hotel on the promontory drew visitors arriving by rail and steamer. The album caption and its tracings are unverified, so the exact vantage point is best read from the image itself.
