The Sentinels, a giant sequoia in Mammoth Grove, is listed at 315 feet on the caption card for this view. The Calaveras Big Trees had drawn wide attention after a hunter came upon the grove in 1852, and by the 1860s photographers were bringing cameras into these forests to meet a growing demand for scenic views. This print is one half of a stereograph pair, the kind viewed through a hand stereoscope to create a sense of depth, and it was issued as number 875 in the *Gems of California Scenery* series. The height figure comes from old caption data and has not been independently verified.
